Lately multigenerational mixing and teaming in the workplace have been observed in big companies. With ever-increasing numbers, we get to see employees too young for wrinkles or mid-life bulge rising to authoritative positions in small and large enterprises. This innovative approach of hiring young and talented employees is bringing subtle insecurity to experienced employees.

Without any question, experience is a forte for acquiring a decent job but nowadays intelligent, young talent is becoming a threat for ripened veterans. There were times when all the higher designations were only meant for the experienced people while young talented people were not given a try. However, with the changing time, theories have also changed. The ambitious and determined youngsters have changed the scenario, insisting the employers to choose skill over experience.

Not forgetting to mention here,the average age of the founders of three big Internet powers Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft is 24, who did not hold any elaborated experience.

However, the bitter side of this issue is that a multigenerational team leads to clashes of ambitions, management styles and personal values. It gets uncomfortable for the senior employees to take instructions from someone who is young enough to be their son/daughter. Finding their long tenure and experience being ignored, makes them rebellious and disrespect their authoritative counterparts.

But with due respect to all the elderly experienced people, I would advice not to make it an ego problem and acknowledge the fact that it’s not only the experience which makes a man outstand in a crowd but talent also contributes immensely to leave a mark in a respected field.

However, we still can’t ignore the significance of hard-earned experience. I am really confused to give a final verdict to this unending debate but your comments can definitely help me decide …. “Talent or Experience”.
